Governance, Privileged Access & Data Protection
THE PROBLEM
Challenge
The customer handled sensitive information and needed stronger control over who could access it, how privileged access was managed, and how the organization could demonstrate that important security requirements were being followed. The business concern was not only data protection; it was also the ability to show auditors and internal stakeholders that access, encryption and security controls were being managed consistently.
Weak privileged-access controls or inconsistent encryption can increase the impact of a security incident and make audits more difficult. The customer therefore needed a practical governance model that reduced unnecessary access, protected sensitive information, and made compliance status easier to understand and demonstrate.
THE APPROACH
Solution
What We Observed
Our review identified three root areas behind that business concern: privileged access needed stronger governance, encryption and key usage needed a clearly defined operating process, and compliance controls needed continuous visibility rather than being checked only when an audit was approaching. These became the focus of the solution.
Customer-Specific Requirements
- Customer-specific privileged-access model
- Customer-specific KMS and key-management process
- Compliance controls aligned to customer requirements
How We Solved It
We aligned IAM roles and policies with organizational responsibilities and least-privilege principles. KMS key permissions, usage and management procedures were defined around the customer's data-protection needs. AWS Config and Config Rules continuously checked resources against defined security requirements, while CloudTrail and Security Hub supported audit and security visibility.
AWS-Native Controls
IAM, KMS, AWS Config / Config Rules, CloudTrail, Security Hub and GuardDuty where applicable.
THE IMPACT
Outcome
Business Outcome
- Stronger control over privileged access
- Better protection of sensitive customer data
- Improved audit visibility and traceability
- Continuous visibility into compliance status
- Security governance incorporated into operating procedures
Measurable Outcomeย
| Metric | Before | After | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Privileged-access coverage | 60% | 100% | 40 percentage-point improvement |
| Sensitive-data encryption coverage | 75% | 98% | 23 percentage-point improvement |
| Audit evidence preparation effort | 100% baseline | 65% of baseline | 40% reduction |
