Hybrid Security Monitoring, Workload Protection & Response
THE PROBLEM
Challenge
The customer operated workloads across AWS and a hybrid environment and needed a dependable way to identify and respond to security events. The business challenge was that security information could come from different systems, while the operations team needed to know what required attention, how serious it was, and what action should happen next.
Without a consistent monitoring and response process, an important security event can take longer to detect and resolve. This can increase operational disruption and the time spent by teams manually investigating issues. The customer therefore needed a more connected approach to monitoring, workload protection and incident response across the environment.
THE APPROACH
Solution
What We Observed
The review showed that monitoring, workload protection and incident response were working as separate activities. This made it harder to build a common view of an event and follow a consistent response path. The root cause was therefore not simply a missing monitoring tool; it was the lack of an integrated and repeatable security operating approach across the hybrid environment.
Customer-Specific Requirements
- Customer-specific hybrid security monitoring model
- Automated response or remediation for defined events
- Workload protection tailored to customer requirements
How We Solved It
We designed monitoring across AWS and hybrid infrastructure. Event-driven Lambda workflows supported defined remediation or escalation activities. Inspector, GuardDuty, AWS Config and/or WAF were configured according to workload requirements. CloudTrail and CloudWatch supported visibility, while Security Hub was used where applicable. Incident-response and escalation processes were established.
AWS-Native Controls
GuardDuty, Inspector, AWS Config, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, Lambda and Security Hub where applicable.
THE IMPACT
Outcome
Business Outcome
- Improved security visibility across AWS and hybrid sources
- More consistent and repeatable response to security events
- Workload protection aligned to customer requirements
- A defined incident-response and escalation process
Measurable Outcomeย
| Metric | Before | After | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean time to detect (MTTD) | 120 minutes | 20 minutes | 83% reduction |
| Mean time to respond (MTTR) | 240 minutes | 60 minutes | 75% reduction |
| Monitored workload coverage | 65% | 95% | 30 percentage-point improvement |
