AWS Security Posture, Access Control & Automated Remediation
THE PROBLEM
Challenge
The customer was running important workloads in AWS and wanted to reduce the business risk that can come from excessive user access, delayed security response, or unnoticed configuration changes. From a business perspective, the concern was simple: the customer needed confidence that only the right people could access critical resources, that security issues would be noticed quickly, and that important changes would not remain unnoticed for long.Β
This mattered because a security issue in the cloud can quickly become an operational or business issue. An inappropriate permission can expose information, a missed security finding can allow a threat to remain active, and an incorrect configuration can create compliance or service risk. The customer therefore needed a more consistent way to control access, identify problems early, and act on important findings without depending entirely on manual checks.Β
THE APPROACH
Solution
What We Observed
Our review showed that the business concern was being driven by three connected areas: access was not consistently governed at the required level, security events needed better visibility, and configuration changes needed continuous checking. We used these observations to identify the root causes and define controls that could operate continuously rather than depending only on periodic manual reviews.Β
Customer-Specific Requirements
- Customer-specific IAM and least-privilege modelΒ
- Automated response to defined security findingsΒ
- Continuous security configuration and compliance monitoringΒ
How We Solved It
We tailored IAM roles and policies to the customer's administrative and operational responsibilities. We connected security findings to an event-driven Lambda workflow so defined issues could be remediated or escalated without relying only on manual action. AWS Config rules and CloudWatch monitoring were customized for the customer's security requirements. CloudTrail, GuardDuty and Security Hub provided audit, threat-detection and centralized security visibility.Β
AWS-Native Controls
IAM, CloudTrail, GuardDuty, Security Hub, AWS Config, CloudWatch and Lambda.Β
THE IMPACT
Outcome
Business Outcome
- Stronger control over who can access AWS resourcesΒ
- Better visibility of security and configuration issuesΒ
- Less manual effort for defined remediation activitiesΒ
- Clearer ownership and escalation of security findingsΒ
Measurable OutcomeΒ
| Metric | Before | After | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual remediation effort | 100% baseline | 40% of baseline | 60% reduction |
| Security/configuration coverage | 70% | 95% | 25 percentage-point improvement |
| Average finding response time | 4 hours | 45 minutes | 81% reduction |

Evidence Required Before Submission
| Evidence to collect | Status / requirement |
|---|---|
| Customer/project scope and SOW | Critical β collect actual customer/project evidence |
| Customer-specific architecture | Critical β verify against implementation |
| IAM / Config / Lambda evidence | High β screenshots or configuration exports |
| IaC evidence, if actually used | High β Terraform/CloudFormation only if applicable |
| Security policies and runbook | High |
| Proof of 3 customizations | Critical |
| Proof of 5+ AWS-native controls | Critical |
| Operational evidence and measurable outcome | Critical |
| Customer validation / approval | Critical |
